Field Services Division

The Police Officer Standards and Training Council, Field Services Training Division provides in-service training to Connecticut certified police officers statewide. Training is offered to approximately 220 police agencies of all ranks including patrol officers, police investigators, supervisors, managerial, and executive personnel.  Courses include advanced, technical, and specialized programs in subject areas as such as accident investigation, criminal investigation, firearms, narcotics, driving while intoxicated (DWI), legal issues, first line supervision and middle management.

Specialized programs are offered annually to youth officers, crime prevention officers, community policing officers, firearms instructors, defensive tactics instructors, baton instructors, tactical drug enforcement teams, crisis negotiators, physical fitness specialists, undercover police investigators and internal affairs unit staff.

A in-service calendar is distributed on a quarterly basis projecting course offerings available to police agencies. Registration for training courses must meet the approval of department’s authorizing officials when applying by POSTC course announcement procedures. All course participation stipulate training prerequisites, eligibility for participation, attendance requirements, testing requirements, and the POSTC dress code requirement relating to classroom or practical exercise needs.

The division conducts, sponsors and coordinates over 125 programs annually and offers instructor development courses for police instructor certification.

The division regularly reviews outside in-service training courses for POSTC review training credit. The division works cooperatively with other state, federal, and local agencies including the Connecticut State Police Division of Criminal Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, State of CT Office of Policy and Management and regional police training associations.

It is the mission of the Field Services Training Division to provide all police personnel with challenging, professional, innovative, and contemporary police training at the Connecticut Police Academy or at various training sites.
